- Abstract
Introduction: The World Health Organization (WHO) defines a fall as an event that results in a person coming to rest inadvertently on the ground or floor or other lower level. In Spain, one in three people over sixty five years old suffers a fall at least once a year, and 1,400 of wihich are fatal. Objective: To know the prevalence of falls among patients admitted to the Hospital Central de la Defensa “Gómez Ulla” (HCDGU) and to analyze the sociodemographic and clinical-pharmacological characteristics of the patients who suffered a fall. Material and Method: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective study of patients ≥16 years old admitted to HCDGU in 2019. Descriptive statistical analysis of the “falls registry of admitted patients” database (Quality Unit). Results: The prevalence was 1‰ hospital stays. 51% were men whose mean age was 76.7 ± 13.33 years. 82% of them were over 65 years old. The admission services with the highest number of falls were Internal Medicine (42.9%), Digestive (14.3%) and Pneumology (13.3%); the shift that recorded the most falls was the night shift followed by the afternoon shift. The event occurred mainly in the room (74.5%) and toilet (17.0%). 34.7% of the patients was confused after the fall, and 6.12% was agitated. Risk assessment had been carried out with the Downton Scale upon the admission of the patients, and 77.5% of them presented a higher risk. 55.1% of the patients were under treatment with benzodiazepines, 44.9%, with antihypertensives, 22.4% with hypoglycemic agents, and 16.3% with neuroleptics. Injury occurred in 43.9% of patients. They were serious in 7.2%. Conclusions: The prevalence of falls was 1‰ hospital stays, in patients ≥16 years old admitted to the HCDGU in 2019. Patients ≥80 years old, with a score ≥3 on the Downton Risk Scale and undergoing treatment with benzodiazepines and/or antihypertensives, were the profile of patients who presented the event most frequently.
