- Abstract
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFAS) are a class of manufactured chemicals widely used in industry and consumer products, whose bioaccumulation and biotoxicity have been verified in recent years. Although the production and use of PFAS have been restricted to a certain extent, they are still detected in large quantities in environment due to their high stability and long-range transport, especially in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This paper reviews the current research progress in the interaction between PFAS and activated sludge which deserves special attention due to the biological toxicity of PFAS and the ability of PFAS removal by activated sludge. It is found that activated sludge mainly removes PFAS from wastewater by adsorption, while biodegradation has little effect on PFAS removal. The adsorption affinity of activated sludge to PFAS is closely related to the properties of PFAS and activated sludge. A large amount of PFAS adsorbed on activated sludge will affect the functionality of wastewater treatment by changing the properties of activated sludge and even the community structure of microorganisms in activated sludge. The paper concludes with an outlook for future research for better understanding the interaction between activated sludge and PFAS and theoretical support for PFAS pollution risk assessment.
