- Abstract
In the upper catchment of the Loire River, the floodplain between Chassenard (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Allier) and Digoin (Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Saône-et-Loire) provides an interesting framework to discuss recent fluvial changes and the riverside communities' awareness. We propose a cross approach, based on physical and social geography, to highlight the processes - conscious or oblivious - used by local people to keep in mind the spatial changes of the river. Our study is based on a geohistorical analysis of local toponyms. A modern or contemporaneous origin of these place names (XVIIIth-XXth centuries AD) illustrate abandoned meanders, fertile lands, passages or locations protected from flooding. This study also considers oral and written sources, including numerous flooding tags of the XIXth century AD. According to this analysis, exceptional and historical floods are tipping points, mainly contributing to the collective, and somewhat selective, memory of the riverside communities. Beyond the risk, such interconnected examples highlight that changes affecting river flows could also forge a close symbiotic link and a strong memory-based spatial heritage.
