Mitigating fur seal interactions: relocation from Tasmanian aquaculture farms.

- Abstract
The article presents a study on the seals trapped at Tasmanian salmon farms, and investigates specific trends resulting from seal interactions and subsequent relocation. It aims to provide a more detailed analysis of the seal relocation mitigation strategy. Data were collected from 1990 to 2005 inclusive from over 4500 relocation farms and 1100 seals. From the relocations, 56% of the seals were captured and most of them had less than 10 captures, or 46%, with 3% trapped more than 20 times. Relocations were done mostly in seasonal period, occurring in the spring and austral winter with a peak in August. It asserts that the problem in seal interaction is the inability to exclude seals from pens and fish docks, and salmon farms provide predictable, accessible food source for seals.
