- Abstract
The article investigates the effects of biochar (BC) addition on nitrogen (N) retention and greenhouse gas (GHG) flux. Two sizes of oak-derived BC were added to two soils, aridic Argiustoll and aquic Haplustoll, with and without N fertilizer and extractable nitrate and ammonium and GHG efflux were measured. Results show that BC had no effect on nitrate, ammonium, or nitrous oxide in the unfertilized treatments of either soil. BC decreased cumulative extractable nitrate in N fertilized treatments by 8% but had mixed effects on ammonium. Soil pH and total treatment N predicted soil nitrous oxide flux well across the two different soils.
