- Abstract
The article focuses on the book "Monopoly Policy in the UK: Assessing the Evidence," by Roger Clarke, Stephen Davies, and Nigel Driffield. Appraises the effectiveness of remedies to monopoly abuse in Great Britain that were put in place following Monopolies and Merger Commission (MMC) investigations over the period 1973-95. Provides an overview of competition policy in Great Britain and a comparison with the approaches used in the European Union and the United States. The book Profiles the full population of monopoly cases investigated by the MMC between 1973 and 1995, describing the structure of the markets investigated, the problems encountered, and the remedies used. The book studies fourteen cases in more depth, discussing cases involving monopoly pricing and price leadership; collusive practices; predatory pricing and price discrimination; and vertical restraints. It provides an overall assessment of the effectiveness of remedies introduced following MMC investigations. The book considers possible reform of the British monopoly policy.
