- Abstract
Objective: to analyze nursing understandings about the safety of elderly patients hospitalized in the emergency unit in times of COVID-19. Methods: this is a mixed study, with a quantitative and qualitative approach, of the participant type. 21 nurses and 29 nursing technicians participated in this research, who are assigned to the emergency unit and work in the respiratory block of a public hospital in the Federal District. Results: of the professionals investigated, most were female and reported moderate difficulty in assisting elderly people with COVID-19. Half of these, mentioned moderate difficulty following patient safety protocols. Discussion: it is observed that care for the elderly person hospitalized in times of COVID-19 requires the expansion of training, resources and support for nursing professionals who work in the emergency. Conclusion: from this study, it was possible to identify that the COVID-19 pandemic transformed health services and highlighted problems already experienced for many years.
