- Title
THE PROBLEM WITH PR.
- Authors
Lardeyret, Guy
- Abstract
The article discusses the important information about the problems associated with proportional representation (PR) to the system of plurality elections. Countries where PR is the rule end up with multipartism and coalition governments, while elections favor the two-party system and single-party governments. The coalitions so common in PR systems often cannot survive serious disagreement over particular measures. Moreover, proportional representation tends to give small parties disproportionate power because such group control the swing seats needed to make up a majority coalition.
