Abstract
The article explores the dialects and folklore of the south-western peninsula of England against their wider linguistic and cultural background. Topics discussed include information on the story collected by Alfred Williams in the Vale of White Horse in Berkshire; discussions on the Williams' views on the “Killing the Devil” phrase; and the information on the childhood folklores in the early years of the twentieth century.
