- Abstract
INTRODUCTION: The term coping is used to indicate a group of cognitive and behavioural efforts that individuals use to lead with the specific demands that come up within stressfull situations. OBJECTIVES: Analyse coping skills in young soccer players, comparing athletes from the under 12 and under 13 squad. Among these players a division was made taking into consideration athletes with regional and national competitive level. METHODOLOGY: A total of 61 male soccer players from a youth academy in the city of Juiz de Fora/MG, not including goal keepers, participated in the study. All of them were athletes with a minimum one year experience in the sport and were divided into two groups according to their age: under 12 (n = 32) and under 13 (n = 29). Data were collected by the coaches, inside the academy´s hall of events before the training sessions, in a single opportunity (cross-sectional design), during the middle of the season. Two instruments were used: Athlete characterization questionnaire and Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28- ACSI-28. This tool has 28 items, with seven skills, each one of them compound by four items, punctuated in a scale (0= almost never; 1=sometimes; 2=frequently; 3=almost all the time), varying between 0 and 12 points. The sum of all these subscales is denominated total coping (varying from 0 to 84 points). The seven admeasurements are: 1) Leading with adversities; 2) Best under pressure performance; 3) Mental/Goal preparation; 4) Concentration; 5) Worry free; 6) Motivation/self confidence: 7) Trainability. The accuracy of the data was assessed by the Komolgorov-Smirnov test, then a descriptive analysis of the data was performed, such as mean and standard deviation values. Finally, we analysed the differences of coping strategies between athletes of different age groups and competitive levels. RESULTS: No significant differences were found when comparing the average values of the 7 skills and total coping between age (under 12 and under 13) and neither between the competitive level (regional and national). The following results were obtained comparing the skills of coping in each category (under 12/ under 13): Leading with adversities: 8,16 (±1,68)/ 7,62 (±1,59), p= 0,636; best under pressure performance: 7,38 (± 2,21)/7,59 (± 2,24),p 0,918: mental/goal preparation: 7,91 (±1,63)/7,45 (±1,32), p= 0,205; concentration: 7,31 (± 2,19)/7,59 (±1,78), p= 0,155: worry free: 5,8 (± 2,25)/5,10 (± 2,24), p= 0,846: motivation/self confidence: 10,72 (± 1,70)/11,03 (±1,80), p= 0,306; trainability: 5,19 (± 1,33)/5,34(+-1,14), p= 0,354: total coping: 52,03 (± 7,00)/51,72(±6,46), p= 0,587. CONCLUSION: The coping abilities of young base soccer players evaluated in this study were "leading with adversities", "under pressure performance", "mental/goal preparation", "worry free", "motivation/self confidence" and trainability". Although no significant differences were found between athletes of these different ages and competitive levels, the development of coping skills in athletes should be prioritized by the regular sports coaches, aiming the expansion of strategies for coping with stress situations that are typical of the sport, enabling the athletes to have a better performance and greater chance of success in it.
