- Title
Labour market segmentation in Canada: an econometric approach.
- Authors
Merrilees, William J.
- Abstract
This paper tests the notion that the Canadian labour market is segmented on the basis of age and sex. Econometric rather than descriptive methods are employed. Segmentation hypotheses are evaluated using estimated Allen elasticities of substitution between pairs of labour inputs differentiated on the basis of age and sex. These elasticities are obtained from jointly estimated labour demand functions. Alternative labour demand systems are estimated, reflecting different specifications of the production function from which they are derived. The hypothesis of segmentation is confirmed. Adult males, adult females, youth males, and youth females typically work in non-competing labour markets.
