- Abstract
The article presents the ordinary Black women developing their unique version of respectability. Topics include Black women believing such behavior would enhance their own lives while forcing whites in recognizing them as equal; religious and civic leaders within Black communities arguing about Blacks using respectability in fighting discrimination; and Black leaders emphasizing the virtues of thrift, temperance, and purity when discussing the politics of respectability.
