- Title
Blood Transfusions: Is "Safest Ever" Safe Enough?
- Authors
Bledrycki, Barbara A.
- Abstract
The article informs that although the frequency of blood transfusions has decreased greatly in the oncology setting because of the success of hematopoietic growth factors, patients with cancer still occasionally need blood transfusions. Nucleic acid testing (NAT) is a semiautomated, highly sensitive testing system that can rapidly detect the genetic material of HCV, HIV, and West Nile Virus. NAT technology may replace the standard testing that reacts to antibodies of the viruses because it is able to detect infections before antibodies and symptoms develop.
