- Abstract
The Labrador landscape is littered with the remnants of sod structures that cannot be readily associated with a specific ethnic group because of the rapid adoption of this type of dwelling by Labrador Inuit, Europeans, and culturally-mixed families. Sod structures occupied by culturally-mixed families of Labrador Inuit and Europeans, which are today known as Labrador Métis, have not been studied in detail. This paper outlines the excavation and analysis of one such structure: site FkBg-24, a nineteenth-century Labrador Métis sod structure. The results were compared with contemporaneous Labrador Inuit and European sites in order to assess distinguishing features of Labrador Metis families and to formulate an initial archaeological definition that can be used to identify Labrador Métis sod structures.
