- Abstract
The aim of this study is to research the motives behind Jorg Immendorff's creation of the work "Café Deutschland". Meanwhile, it aims to uncover the reasons for the symbolic elements used in the artist's work. Immendorff is an artist who carries the history of Germany to his works. It is thought that by including neon colour stains, dark -- gloomy shades and a complicated composition in his paintings, he is increasing the dramatic effect of the war. Furthermore, in contrast to his contemporaries, he transforms symbolic elements into metaphoric forms within the atmosphere of the works. There are two outstanding findings in his series': the first, is raising awareness in his community by carrying the traumatic situation that war creates on people onto contemporary art. The other is that he allows for subliminal messages in his works by using historical, mythological, and symbolic elements. Both findings can be considered as valid reasons for the artist. Because art becomes much more provocative with the influence of supressed emotions and interventions.
