- Abstract
The article discusses the investigation into the gender of the South African professional runner Caster Semenya by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) in 2009, following her acquisition of the gold medal in the women's 800 meter race at the World Championships in Athletics in Berlin, Germany. Particular focus is given to the mass media's portrayal of Semenya's gender, including its contention that she lacks feminine attributes. An overview of the support among South Africans for Semenya, including in relation to gender equality and human and women's rights in South Africa, is provided.
