- Abstract
The basis for human existence is interaction. Without interaction man's spectacular achievements in the fields of technology, education, politics, etc, would not have been possible. Central to human interaction is language. Language consists of speech sound and 'naturally occurring sounds (onomatopoeia) and non sound, non verbal mode of communication'. Language must therefore be seen as a combined harmony of both verbal and non verbal actions, both working together for effective understanding of meanings. Language as a tool for communication has made man to be the master of his environment. Communication is an intricate matrix of interacting social acts that occur in a complex social environment. This social environment is culture and if we truly are to understand communication, we must also understand culture. This study looks at the combined use of verbal and non verbal communication and the effect of non verbal behaviors on the overall understanding of meanings in a communicative event, using chieftaincy installation ceremonies among the Igala speaking.
