- Abstract
Objective: to evaluate by means of the development of an index the protection and health promotion in Mexico. Methods: an ecological study with data from the 32 Mexican states was carried out; seven representative indicators of protection and health promotion proposed by the World Health Organization were selected and collected through the Mexican health system and the Pan American Health Organization, and a main components analysis was performed (varimax rotation). (Results: The states of Coahuila, Nayarit, Colima, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas and Tabasco obtained the highest position within the health protection and promotion index in Mexico. While Oaxaca, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Puebla, Guerrero and Yucatan showed the lowest health protection and promotion index. Conclusions: the estimate of an index like the one proposed for the set of states in Mexico will approach the current knowledge of the regional inequality that exists in health and social opportunities and, also, will help understand and analyze the situation in which the country subsists and to clarify important aspects of this approach conceptual framework which is equity in health.
