- Abstract
It is essential that companies be able to develop and apply technical and scientific procedures in order to reduce costs. Tool steels are among the most used materials in the cold forming industry, so being able to repair damaged cold forming dies cutting edge by applying welding processes is a relevant manufacturing engineering issue. AISI D6 steel has poor weldability due to its high Carbon Equivalent content, which combined with the thermal welding cycle could lead to cold cracking. In this work the pre heating and post welding treatment temperatures were varied while the interpass temperature was fixed. That aimed to reduce the molecular hydrogen content from base metal and prevent the formation of brittle microstructure (martensite) in the weld zones. The results showed that it is possible to obtain welds without any discontinuities, provided the pre heating, interpass and post welding treatment temperatures are properly determined and followed accurately. Besides that, the hardness of the die cutting edge zone has shown consistent with the quenched and tempered base metal properties, which confirms the efficiency of repair welding procedure.
