- Abstract
This study analysed the relationship between crisis response strategies of Malaysia Airlines and the Malaysian government during the first 120 days after the disappearance of Flight MH370 and the resulting 3,861 social media posts from the public. Public posts responding to the event were interpreted using work by Allport and Postman (1947) on the psychology of rumour. Specifically, we examined how changing crisis response strategies over time likely created ambiguity and an information void. This void was filled with public social media posts spreading rumours, and that these rumours changed over time as the crisis response strategy changed. Ultimately, we hope this examination will move us closer to greater understanding regarding public demand for information during and after crises. To mitigate spread of rumours online, we provide suggestions for practitioners during crises.
