- Abstract
Globalization and technological developments profoundly affect the economic, social and political structures and push them into a rapid and often unpredictable process of change. This rapid change causes social norms and rules to lose their validity and meaning, resulting in leaving a gap until new rules and norms are formed. The gap created by normlessness pushes organizations into an anomic process that leads to undesirable results. The dimensions of the reflection of anomie on the academy as an organization may cause results that will deeply affect the entire education system, scientific studies and teachings, and the academic vision and reputation of countries. In this context, the aim of the study is to analyze the attitudes of the academicians towards organizational anomie by considering them with demographic variables over the dimensions of normlessness, meaninglessness, managerial insecurity and hopelessness/despair, and to test the existence of anomie in academia. While the population of the study consisted of 270 academicians working at a public university in the 2021-2022 academic year, the sample consisted of 129 people. The findings of the study indicated that the normlessness levels of female academicians were lower than male academicians. The normlessness levels of the single academicians were higher than the married ones. Organizational anomie values decreased as the age of the participants increased. In addition, the normlessness, managerial insecurity and hopelessness/despair values of doctoral academicians were higher than those of graduate and undergraduate students. The findings showed that although the academicians thought that there were many wrong and missing practices in the university they work, they looked to the future with hope and are determined to improve themselves.
