- Abstract
The repair of the tubes-of-clay-buildings - Holocaustgedenkstätte Landsberg/Lech - preservation of the status quo The concentration camp Kaufering VII is located in the South-West of the city of Landsberg/Lech, Bavaria, and was erected in the summer of 1944 as one of eleven camps of the concentration camp Dachau. Except for three intact and three damaged buildings out of tubes of clay there are no superficial visible building structures left. The buildings were used as housings for forced labourers. They are one of the last testimonies of the inhuman imprisonment of civilians during the Third Reich. Thanks to the engagement of the citizens' initiative 'Europäische Holocaustgedenkstätte Stiftung e. V.', the complete decay of the buildings has been avoided. The whole ensemble is now protected as national heritage. Measures in order to preserve the rest of the buildings were planned since 2009 and realized until 2016. The contribution of Heritage Conservation was to shore up the existing stock and the overcome character of the barracks. Damages on intact and ruinous buildings should be kept and secured only as far as necessary to make sure that visitors are not at risk and further decay would be delayed. The three superficial remained and vaulted tube-of-clay-buildings are covered with soil. They showed signs of total physical decay. The vaulting shell, the facades and the bases had cracks and were moisturised. Lots of the tubes of clay were damaged or even lost. Particular damaged parts of the vaults were carefully toughened up from outside. The shell was covered with a new sealing. All measures were planned and realized under the aspect of preservating an impression as authentical as possible. The construction measures at the tube-of-clay-buildings were appreciated with the 'Bayerischer Denkmalpflegepreis' in gold in 2016.
