- Abstract
In reaction to Donald Trump’s authoritarian-populist politics, many political philosophers and philosophers of education have argued that certain, nationally oriented forms of democratic education within schools should play a central role in overcoming the contemporary crisis of representative democracy in the USA. This article maintains, however, that nationally oriented forms of democratic education within schools are insufficient to counter the threats to representative democracy. This is because they do not take the causes of the crisis of representative democracy that are situated at the inter-, supra- and transnational levels seriously enough. These causes are related to technocratic and elitist forms of political opinion- and will-formation. Thus, this article maintains that an approach that combines national and transnational democratic education within schools is more promising. This is because transnational democratic education within schools would contribute to the democratization of inter-, supra- and transnational political arrangements and thus address the causes of the crisis of representative democracy that are situated beyond the nation-state.
