- Abstract
The article summarizes human influence on arctic-alpine tundra in the Krkonoše/Karkonosze Mts (Giant Mts). The first important human disturbances were connected to grazing, building of chalets, and clear-cutting (and eventually re-planting) of mountain pine. Later on, the tourism started to play a major role, mainly disturbances around chalets (eutrophication), trampling, and soil erosion. The most profound changes in physical-chemical soil conditions were caused by alkaline road building material used in 1970's and 1980's, generating roadside vegetation with high amount of synanthropic species. The KRNAP Administration organizes long-term monitoring and elimination of invasive and expansive species, and mountain pine plantations degrading unique arctic-alpine tundra ecosystems and relic soils. Since 1996, alkaline paved roads are reconstructed (alkaline gravel replaced by siliceous materials). The ability of arctic-alpine tundra to recover in the extreme climatic conditions is limited and the process is expected to be slow. Still, after the removal of non-indigenous alkaline material, we consider the restoration possible.
