Existential there and catenative concord. Evidence from the British National Corpus.
- Authors
Olofsson, Arne
- Abstract
The article discusses the existential sentences and subject-verb concord in formal Standard English in Great Britain. It states that in existential construction, the predicate verb shows an agreement with the imaginary subject. It cites that when catenatives are used, its syntax becomes more complicated. It also mentions that in British English, collective nouns such as group or team can take a singular or plural verb.
