- Abstract
The following article deals with Barthold Feind's play Das verwirrte Haus Jacob, which was condemned as libel shortly after it was first published. His play engages with a contemporary political issue: the riots in Hamburg around 1700. This article investigates how Feind makes use of the poetic means of comedy in the ongoing public opinion battle. His play addresses a public expecting scandalous news. It attempts to interpret the current events as exemplum, but encounters difficulties which demonstrate that traditional time concepts begin to become fragile.
