- Abstract
Introduction: The study of the elderly population has led to new understandings regarding the concept of quality of life (QOL), including physical, psychological, social well-being, and self-esteem, which can be negatively affected when health is compromised. Compromised oral health (OH) can affect nutritional status, physical and mental well-being, pleasure in participating in an active social life, and, consequently, QOL. Aim: This study aimed was to test the association between QOL and edentulism among elderly individuals in the South Indian population. Materials and Methods: This study was carried out with 300 individuals aged 60 years or older, functionally independent and institutionalized. Data were collected with a questionnaire and oral examination. The edentulism was the independent variable and QOL was the dependent variable which were assessed using the World Health Organization QOL-Old (WHOQOL-Old) scores. The study participants were categorized into three groups: Group1 - completely dentulous with no missing teeth, Group 2 - partial edentulous with one or few missing teeth, and Group 3 - completely edentulous with a total loss of teeth. Results: Thirty-two patients constituted Group 1 (10.66%), 192 constituted Group 2 (64%), and 76 patients constituted Group 3 (25.33%). The QOL scores for Group 1 were 87.2 ± 3.41, Group 2 were 53.9 ± 2.17, and Group 3 were 58.4 ± 2.84, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between the three groups with respect to QOL (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The overall WHOQOL-Old score demonstrated loss in QOL in this group, indicating the need for more in-depth studies on this issue. The present study concluded loss of teeth in both forms, partial and complete edentulism, significantly affects the QOL in the elderly population. Hence, adequate prosthodontic care should be initiated to improve OH and QOL.
