- Abstract
The subject of this article consists of biographies of female poets compiled by Mehmed Gazali of Balıkesir. Born in Istanbul, and later travelled to Balıkesir to work as a teacher, Gazali had always been involved in literary and cultural life. In addition to individual books, Gazali had also published articles and poems in various journals. Biographies of 12 female poets, who lived during the Ottoman period, published in Irmak journal, consisting of 16 issues published in Balıkesir in 1928, consist of biographical information, poetry, and examples from the poems of these female poets. Firstly, brief information on the complete studies conducted on female poets in the Ottoman period were provided in this article, and then Mehmed Gazali, who wrote the aforementioned biographies, was introduced. Afterwards, such subjects as the sources and contents of such biographies, their status within the tradition of collection of biographies, and the author's style in evaluating such female poets were discussed. Finally, the texts of these biographies were included at the end of the study. This article is expected to contribute to a better recognition of the aforementioned female poets and further studies to be conducted on these female poets.
