- Title
Are We Losing the Science of Taxonomy?
- Authors
Drew, Lisa W.
- Abstract
The article discusses the decline in the prominence and resources for taxonomy, despite the importance of correct species identification in fields such as biodiversity conservation. The need for well-trained taxonomists for the curation of collections of biological specimens is explored, although universities are including fewer courses in their curricula and taxonomy is often not taught to scientists who have not declared a specialty in the discipline. Trained taxonomists often have trouble finding employment or funding for their research and do not receive bibliographic citations for taxonomic monographs, but experts believe that they will become vital to research on the effects of climate change on ecosystems and the control of harmful agricultural pests.
