- Abstract
The article discusses the responses of Allied soldiers and German concentration camp (KZ) personnel during the liberation of such camps. The liberators are said initially to have responded with fury at the Nazi KZ administrators. Allied soldiers only rarely were able to arrest the SS (Schutzstaffel) perpetrators, whom they necessarily had to shield from the vengeance-seeking inmates. Films taken of the KZ personnel are said to to have revealed the camp officials as ordinary rather than monstrous people. Images of the KZ personnel in these films are analyzed, as are contemporary reactions to those films.
