The article chronicles the raid against the city of Lawrence, Kansas led by a guerilla band under slave trader and horse thief William Clarke Quantrill on August 21, 1863, based on the digital portal Kansas Memory of the Kansas Historical Society. Topics discussed include the massacre that occurred during the raid, a background on Quantrill and his band, and the details of the raid. An overview of historical records on survivors of the raid and massacre and the American Civil War is offered.
