A critique is presented of the 17th century British Christian play "The Martyred Soldier" by Henry Shirley, focusing on the staging of torture scenes in the play. Special effects in theater, the relationship between religion and the state in the play, and tragic themes in the play are discussed, as well as transcendence, suffering, and martyrdom in the play.
