- Abstract
Malaka was the main urban centre on the eastern boundary of the Circle of the Strait of Gibraltar. Its importance is physically attested by the construction of strong city walls at the beginning of the sixth century BC, which were extended in the first half of the following century, incorporating an ancient emporial sanctuary. This paper analyses some the city's least known aspects, such as its topography and the urban plan surrounding the cathedral-Picasso Museum, and revises others, such as the city's control over the Bay of Malaga and its hinterland, with particular reference to Cartima (Cártama), located along the Guadalhorce river.
