- Abstract
Pla ywriting ha s a history of 2500 yea rs while its a ca demic educa tion ha s only 100 yea rs' history. The first undergraduate level courses about dramatic writing began to be given in Harvard University in 1905 a nd at Ya le University in 1925. Dramatic writing education then began to spread to different countries at various levels. In Turkey, the first playwriting courses began to be given at Ankara University in 1964 and Ege University in 1976. Today, dramatic writing education continues in seven different universities. There are no studies that evaluate dramatic writing education programs in Turkey, and that make suggestions to develop existing programs. Besides, review of available literature reveals that there is no research that compares the education programs in Turkey and in the rest of the world. In order to improve existing education programs in a discipline, it is very important and necessary to examine the scopes of different education programs and open them to discussion; hence this study will contribute to available literature in this respect. The aim of this study is to analyze dramat ic writ ing/pla ywrit ing education programs in Turkey and the USA comparatively. The scope of this study is limited by 2018 -2019 academic year data of active education programs in Turkey and the USA. The USA is chosen since it is the f irst country where dramatic writing undergraduate level education began. The study makes a prof ile using a vailable data. In addition to preferring a horizontal approach as in most comparative education studies, the study uses qualitative research methods, mainly documentation analysis. Differences between program levels, student quotas, admission and graduation conditions, compulsory and elective courses are taken into account.
