- Title
KNOWLEDGE AS AN INTERPRETATIVE KEY FOR FOOTWASHING IN JOHN 13,1-20.
- Authors
Hochstedler, Andrew J.
- Abstract
The theme of knowledge in John 13,1-20 offers an interpretative key for understanding the footwashing as eschatological hospitality, preparation for and renewal of the relationship with God. The passage presents a trajectory in which the disciples move from ignorance to knowledge, a knowledge which in the Fourth Gospel signifies relationship. Verse 1 describes Jesus' knowledge of his mission and relationship with God. By contrast, in vv. 2-11, an omniscient Jesus tells the disciples that they must accept the footwashing despite their lack of understanding. Verses 12-20 focus on the disciples' growing comprehension of the gesture, not merely as an act to be repeated, but as participation in Jesus' own relationship with the Father.
