- Abstract
The paper briefly introduces issues in Byzantine and Islamic pottery studies in the Eastern Mediterranean involving archaeological sciences. The case study of Byzantine and Frankish Chalcis (Greece) is developed from a methodological viewpoint. It shows how research proceeded through a combination of both well-supported hypotheses and serendipity, based on archaeological, historical, geological, geochemical, statistical arguments. Significant conclusions were sometimes obtained thanks to the convergence of results, some initially based on the most unlikely leads, which all fell into place like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle to form a coherent picture.
