- Abstract
From 1965 to 1979, thirty-four secular priests from the diocese of Rimouski left the priesthood. And yet, few historical and sociological studies in Quebec exist on the exact number of departures or the reasons behind them. While a few key factors can be advanced to put these departures into context - modernization and changes in the mores of Quebec society, Vatican II and its failed promises of reforms, or the requirement of celibacy - the motives, intentions and representations of those involved have not been a subject of detailed investigation. To remedy this fact, we have held a series of interviews with priests and former priests of the diocese who were at the heart of the turmoil experienced by the local Church during the period in question. In this article, we present the preliminary findings of our work as well as the general observation of a marked gap between the "tumultuous" meaning and the "discreet" nature of the departures in the context of the diocese of Rimouski.
