- Abstract
Background. Mental disorders are very common among children and adolescents victims of disaster. The Pediatric Symptoms Checklist (PSC) is an easy questionnaire used to identify common mental disorders in children and adolescents. Nevertheless, the internal consistency of the subscale in Colombian population is unknown. Objective. To compute the internal consistency of the subscales of the PSC among displaced children and adolescent victims of a winter disaster in Girón, Colombia. Method. One hundred and one mothers of children and adolescents between six and sixteen years old, from a primary school of a shelter completed the PSC. Internal consistency was computed by the Cronbach alpha coefficient. Results. Cronbach alpha coefficient for attention deficit and hyperactivity symptoms was 0.62; for depressive symptoms, 0.65; for conduct disorder symptoms, 0.50; and for anxiety symptoms, 0.43. Conclusions. The four subscales of the Pediatric Symptoms Checklist exhibit low internal consistency. It is necessary to explore the psychometric properties of other scales for detecting common mental disorders among children and adolescents victimized by natural disasters.
