- Abstract
High performance concrete (HPC) is green concrete which is produced using waste materials with cementitious contents to replace high proportion of cement. This paper presents the studies related to comparing the performance of concrete specimens made with ten percent replacement of silica fume with those made with conventional concrete (termed as control concrete specimens made using cement only). A total of eleven specimens have been employed. The results showed significant improvement in the properties of HPC compared to conventional concrete; the slump of HPC increased by two-hundred percent and the air contents were reduced by twenty-five percent. The average compressive and flexural strengths increased by one hundred twenty-seven and one hundred thirty-nine percent, respectively, compared to the conventional concrete whereas the modulus of elasticity of HPC increased by fifty-nine percent. Both types of concrete specimens were exposed to the same corrosion exposure levels using a simulation programme. The simulation predicted a service life of 74.2 yrs for HPC compared to 13.5 yrs for the control concrete specimens.
