- Authors

- Abstract
The misconception that depression is a normal reaction to having cancer commonly results in untreated depression. Diagnosing depression in the cancer patient is also complicated by the overlap of symptoms of depression with somatic symptoms due to cancer and the side effects of treatment, in addition, women with breast and gynecologic cancer are faced with unique psychological and social challenges, including issues related to sexuality and loss of fertility. In this article, Dr. Netzel and colleagues review the many facets of depression in cancer patients and the effectiveness of various antidepressants and forms of psychotherapy for this population.
