- Authors

- Abstract
The present essay deals with how language acquires a new dimension in the 20th century within the context of societies which form the "global village". On the one hand, it reviews how the mastery of a second language nowadays gives people greater possibilities of sociocultural development and, on the other, it presents English as an international or global language as a consequence of several facts: England colonialism, the later attempt of imposing a planned language like Esperanto as an alternative way for the respect of human rights and how the United States transformed this language into a universal one at the end of the Second World War. In spite of not being the most widely spoken native language, English has been imposed thanks to political, military and economic power. Finally, the essay presents national educational policies with regard to the world panorama and proposes some reflections about the near future
