- Abstract
In this article, I reflect on my journey in education through key moments of learning spanning across nearly three decades as an educator. I provide a snapshot of how these experiences have shaped my identity as an academic and my contribution to the development of the next generation of teachers and leaders through my leadership of initial teacher education at The University of Melbourne. Bringing together research and practice, I explore intersections between educational leadership and initial teacher education in the hope to attract and retain teachers to a profession in teaching. In this work, I discuss how an evolving school landscape with multiple layers of leadership requires a reorientation in teacher preparation to include understandings of schools as organisations, leadership in schools, and the contribution of senior leaders, middle leaders, and teacher leadership to whole school improvement. This article heralds new ways of thinking which respond to the shifting needs in educational leadership with a view to expanding the leadership pipeline necessary for sustained school improvement.
