- Title
Subclinical Acute Kidney Injury Is Acute Kidney Injury and Should Not Be Ignored.
- Authors
Koyner, Jay L.
- Abstract
The article discusses plasma proenkephalin A (penKid), a 5-kD stable breakdown product of enkephalins that accumulates in the setting of reduced glomerular filtration (GFR) as a biomarker of subclinical AKI in critically ill patients. Topics discussed include focus on NGAL (neutrophil gelatinase–associated lipocalin), in the setting of ischemic kidney injury; risk for adverse outcomes in critically ill adults; and risk for receipt of renal replacement therapy or inpatient mortality.
