The article focuses on the role of early English Separatists and Baptists in advancing the notion of religious liberty. Topics discussed include the ideas of Christian apologist Tertullian of Carthage, who helped shape the stance enunciated by the so-called "Edict of Milan," and the works of North African Christian author Lactantius and Sebastian Castellios in defense of religious toleration.
