- Abstract
Iron is one of the unwanted impurities in Al-Si alloys owing to its detrimental influence on the ductility. This work deals with developing a new Al-13Si alloy with high Fe concentration, without significant decrease in its ductility. The formation of the detrimental Fe-rich intermetallics was controlled with the addition of Ni with subsequent heat treatment. Tensile testing, electron microscopy and fractography studies conducted on the alloys confirmed that the detrimental effect of Fe can be suppressed through the evolution of Ni containing Fe-rich intermetallics. Fractography studies confirmed that the heat-treated alloys containing Ni have better ductility than their as-cast counterparts.
