- Abstract
Aim: Nutritional status is known as a major determiner of the quality of life in the general population. It is even more important a determiner in old age. Health workers should pay special attention to the elderly during hospitalisation since they are at greater risk of developing malnutrition. Methods: The prospective study (six months period) evaluated 104 elderly persons hospitalised in general wards. The basic data, weight, height, body mass index (BMI), diet, dyspepsia etc. of each patient were recorded. The relation between the level of self-care (ADL test), mental status (MMSE-Folstein test) and nutritional risk score was evaluated. For statistical analyses we used Pearson chi-square, Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann Whitney U test and Fisher exact test. Results: We found a statistically significant relationship between the changes of the nutritional status and MMSE. The age of the persons monitored was not statistically significant in relation to the nutritional status. Comorbidity was statistically significant to the nutritional status score in the beginning of the monitored period. Polypragmasia influences the nutritional status. Conclusion: The quality of nutritional status influences the quality of life in the elderly during hospitalisation. It is efficient to use standardised tests not only for the nutritional status of elderly person.
