Reef Shipping Impacts to be Considered in Mine Proposal.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the Australian federal government's assessment of whether or not Rio Tinto Weipa Pty Ltd.'s proposed bauxite mine and port development in Embley River, Queensland can progress under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). It notes that the proposal had the potential to trigger the EPBC Act. Environment Minister Tony Burke says that the assessment process should include the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and World Heritage properties.
