- Abstract
A carbonate content study of the southern Švenčionys Upland till layers is presented in the article. Samples were taken from five shallow (25-28 m deep) boreholes. The boreholes were drilled during the geological mapping at a scale of 1:50 000 in 2014 by Lithuanian Geological Survey. The method presented in this paper allowed to obtain not only the total carbonate content, but also calcite and dolomite contents in the glacial sediments. The amount of dolomite is important for determining the age of glacial sediments. The amount of dolomite depends on directions of glacial movements as well as on variety of rocks eroded by it. The amounts of dolomite and calcite could be used to separate the last ice-age glacial sediments from the older ones. The sediments of the last glaciation in most cases have a lower dolomite and calcite ratio if compared to the Medininkai and Žemaitija tills (Rudnickaitė, 1983; 2013). The statistical criterion of the calcite and dolomite ratio was applied to test homogeneity of till layers in the same or different boreholes. A Van der Waerden criterion fitted the best for the study data (Rudnickaitė, 2008; 2013). The statistical test was done using the SAS statistical package (Levulienė, 2009). The homogeneous layers distinguished by the Van der Waerden criterion in different boreholes are identical to real geological layers traced in the area. However, they not always correspond to visually (usually by colour) identified layers. Further study should be carried on using more different research methods in order to assign the same isolated layers to specific stratigraphic units.
