- Abstract
Space has assumed on a new, expanded dimension in conflict and warfare, as exemplified by the ongoing war in Ukraine. With the diverse and extensive use of space-based commercial systems and services, the NewSpace industry has been actively involved in the support and defense of Ukraine, signifying another new dimension of space in crisis and warfare. The article introduces first the importance of the strategic space sphere for the military, along with the vulnerabilities of space capabilities, and challenges for protection. Subsequently, the article discusses the impact of space-related incidents in the war in Ukraine from the very beginning and emphasizes the crucial role of space capabilities in the current stage of the war. On the one hand, the paper will demonstrate the significance of space. It shows the involvement of non-state actors of the NewSpace industry in the war in Ukraine and examines the conclusions that can be drawn so far for the future role of space and commercial space actors in conflict and war. On the other hand, it exposes the resulting consequences, necessary adaptations, and requirements for political regulation regarding three aspects 1) the space sector (especially in Europe), 2) military and warfare, and 3) the relationship between states and commercial entities of NewSpace.
