- Abstract
This article aims to show how important it is for international retailers to identify their core competences and to protect their competitive advantage in host countries. The in-depth interviews of 21 local managers of big international retailers operating in China allowed us to define two core competencies : a so-called "basic" competence and architectural know how. In terms of management, the study further proposes a practical diagnosis to help managers determine these core competences and protect their sustainable competitive advantage in the local context.
